Kickstarter Launch!!!

Help us make a book!

A very merry holiday weekend to you, no matter if you’re celebrating Passover, Good Friday and Easter, or Tomb Sweeping Day! I wanted to give you the EXTREMELY exciting news that The Crown of Secrets is now LIVE on Kickstarter, which means that we’re raising money so that we can actually print a book and ship it to you (as well as pay all those awesome artists who have been working on good faith so far)!

If you’re unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a crowdfunding website – I pitch my creative idea, along with how much money I need to raise in order to make it happen, and anybody can look at it. People who are interested can pledge to donate small amounts of money in order to reach the goal. In exchange, I give them access to the final product and some other cool related stuff. If I don’t make the goal, they don’t give me any money and they lose nothing. In this case, the creative idea is, of course, this book, and the final product is (you guessed it) also the book. You can read more about how it all works at their own About page.

Here's what it looks like...
Here’s what it looks like…

I’ve set the rather ambitious goal of $21,500, but it’s ambitious with good reason: I’m paying the artists fair market price for their work ($8,000 altogether); I’m making a high-quality book ($3,500 for 1,000 copies); I’m shipping it to where it needs to go ($6,000, which includes shipping from the printer to the USA as well as from our processing center to each reader’s mailbox); I’m thanking supporters for their participation in the project ($2,000); I’m paying Kickstarter’s usage fee (10%). [Numbers here are very approximate. I have done much more careful math and would be happy to share it if you’re interested.] I don’t want to compromise on any of these areas, but in order to make it a successful project, I need your help!

The best way for you to help us now is to pledge to buy a book. Not only will it help us fund the printing (etc.), but it will also encourage us as we see supporters… um… supporting us. (Sorry, it’s not the same time for you as it is for me.) The book itself will sell for $25 (although the first 42 backers get it for $20, because). If you’d rather just get the ebook, that’s only $15. You can also get postcards, art prints, original pictures from the book, tutorials, dinner… check it out for yourself! Additionally, I’m creating an activity pack for parents and teachers that will provide coloring pages, games, discussion questions, and those sorts of things.

Every little bit that’s pledged helps us get closer to our goal, and we’d really appreciate it if you could share us with your friends. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

And speaking of development, I’m receiving new art (you can see some of it in the banner at the top of this post) all the time from the artists, and they’re as excited about the book as I am. I’ll post bits of it here and there as it comes in – I’m pumped to let you see the book as it grows from a pupa into adulthood (or whatever it is that books do). It’s going to be awesome, I promise!

Today I also had the amazing opportunity to have a video chat with some 4th and 5th graders in my home state of Vermont who have read a number of my stories with their teacher, my friend Ms Branch. They were full of great feedback and questions (which will help me as I develop the study guide), and it’s really fun to watch their imaginations get fired up in response to what they read.

I’ll be posting a few stories here over the next few weeks to give you a taste of what’s to come. Additionally, if you’re an educator of any sort (but especially in the language section of learning) and would like some stories to read, study, and discuss with your students, please shoot me a message and I’ll be happy to hook you up!

So, if you like what you’ve seen so far, please help us spread the word and raise the money necessary to bring The Crown of Secrets to print. Thanks in advance!
